About the Exam

What is JLPT N5?

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the most widely recognised Japanese language exam in the world. N5 is the first and easiest level of five (N5 to N1). It confirms that you can understand and use basic, everyday Japanese.

The exam has three parts: vocabulary, grammar and reading, and listening. Our course trains all of these together, so you are not caught out by the listening section on exam day.

N5 is a strong first step for anyone interested in Japanese culture, anime and manga, travel, higher studies in Japan, or a career with Japanese companies.

  • Complete beginners — no Japanese needed
  • Anyone planning to appear for JLPT N5

The JLPT is held twice a year, in July and December. In 2026 the tests are on Sunday 5 July and Sunday 6 December. Our batch starts on 15 November 2026 and prepares you for next year's exam, the July 2027 session. Registration is done separately through the Japan Foundation. No. The JLPT measures Language Knowledge (vocabulary and grammar), Reading and Listening, and answers are machine-scored. There is no direct speaking or writing section. We still include speaking and writing practice in class because it helps you learn and remember. Read how the JLPT is designed and scored.

The JLPT uses scaled scores instead of raw scores, so the same level of Japanese gets the same score whichever session you take, easy or hard.
